Those masks are carved in the remote area of the western Zambian and Angolan border by the Mbunda tribe. Hand crafted out of a lightweight local tree called Mongongo, a fast-growing sustainable tree which establishes easily in the sandy soil. The masks are a source of income for this remote community which would otherwise fall into deep poverty.
